Causes of iron deficiency

Iron deficiency and perimenopause

Perimenopause often brings unpredictable cycles — sometimes heavier or longer than before. That blood loss can lower ferritin while fatigue and brain fog are blamed on hormones alone.

Why iron needs rise in midlife

Hormonal shifts can change flow patterns. If periods become heavier, iron losses may exceed intake even when your diet has not changed. Ferritin may fall gradually, with symptoms mistaken for normal aging.

Ask for ferritin alongside other perimenopause labs. Treating iron deficiency does not replace gynecologic evaluation for abnormal bleeding — both may be needed.
