Low ferritin in women

Low ferritin with normal hemoglobin

This lab pattern is one of the most common — and most frustrating — results for women with real symptoms. Your body is using stored iron faster than it is replenished, while red blood cell counts still look acceptable on paper.

What it means

Ferritin reflects reserves; hemoglobin reflects current oxygen-carrying capacity. You can deplete reserves first. Fatigue, hair shedding, and brain fog may appear in this stage.

Clinicians may recommend iron supplementation, dietary changes, or investigation for ongoing blood loss depending on your history. Retesting ferritin in 8–12 weeks shows whether stores are rebuilding.
