Iron deficiency anemia

When to see a doctor about iron deficiency

Many iron deficiency symptoms develop slowly, but some patterns need prompt attention. Knowing when to book a routine visit — and when to seek urgent care — helps you stay safe while pursuing answers.

Seek urgent or emergency care for

  • Chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath at rest
  • Rapid heartbeat with dizziness or confusion
  • Heavy bleeding that soaks through protection hourly or lasts more than seven days
  • Black or bloody stools, or vomiting blood

Book a routine appointment if

  • Fatigue, brain fog, or hair loss persist for weeks
  • You have heavy periods or recent pregnancy
  • Past labs showed low ferritin or anemia
  • Iron supplements cause intolerable side effects
