Iron deficiency in female athletes
Training increases iron turnover. Female runners, triathletes, and dancers may develop low ferritin despite eating well — performance drops, recovery slows, and fatigue lingers after easy sessions.
Foot-strike hemolysis, GI irritation from intense exercise, menstrual losses, and sometimes low dietary intake all contribute. Sports physicians often monitor ferritin in season, not only hemoglobin.
